Description:During the Mexican–American War of 1846–1848 The Mormon Battalion cut a road around Box Canyon in the process of opening a southern wagon route to California. Parts of the road are still visible there. The battalion was a volunteer unit of around 500 Latter-day Saints men whose march of nearly 2,000 miles from Council Bluffs, Iowa to San Diego, California helped to secure the eventual cession of much of the American Southwest from Mexico to the United States. The only battle they fought was against a large herd of wild cattle in Arizona. Anza Borrego State Park, California, US
