Fat Tire Electric Bikes
Fat tire bikes have taken the next evolutionary jump and it is perfect for the sandy roads of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.  First came MOUNTAIN BIKES, which have been around for decades now.  Mountain bikes are great for riding in lots of places but for just a few spots in Anza-Borrego because on most routes you will encounter some deep and soft sand, and the moutain bike tires, just won't make it.  Then came FAT TIRE BIKES, bikes with very wide tires.  The can take you just about anyplace you want to go in Anza-Borrego but the combination of the fat tire and the deep sand give you an extreme workout; it takes tremendous energy, and that is fine if you want that, but it makes the trip too difficult for many casual riders.  And then we come to FAT TIRE ELECTRIC BIKES, and they are perfect.  YOu get all the benefit of the fat tire with an electric moter to assist you.  The motor only works when you pedel and there are multiple levels of assists, so a fat tire electric bike is nothing like riding a scooter.  You can select a low level of assistance that will still give you a decent workout, or when the going is really hard, or you want a break, you can increase the level of assistance and make the ride easier.  Braking systems are also engineered to provide for smoother and less skittish braking on sandy surfaces.  Expect fun, expect to see the desert in a unique way, and bring plenty of water for the good workout.

Keep in mind that you are only permitted to ride on establish roadways, no cross country travel is permitted, but the selection of great roadways is extensive.

Here are a few routes to consider, with maps.  The first two areas are possible on a mountain bike.
Road Biking
Whether your idea of biking is to ride a five or ten mile loop around town or a 100 mile route through the badlands, Borrego Springs has some of the finest winter road biking in the United States.  Roads are generally wide, traffic is low, and the scenery is always great.  Terrain is whatever you want; there are lots of gently rolling routes in the Borrego Valley and many quiet and easy routes to visit the sculptures or though the agricultural lands north of town.  For the aggressive crowd, there is world class Montezuma Grade, 3,368 feet of vertical in just ten miles.  Roadbike routes include: Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
  Bike Rides for Kids
Borrego Springs does not normally have heavy traffic, but there is traffic, so parents need to be extremely careful with small children as they would anywere.  Here are some ideas

If the children are old enough to be trusted on the road, they can ride along with their parents on either of the sculpture route tours listed above.

A good quiet area for children is Church Lane, across from the Borrego Springs post office and County Park.  Visibility is very good, you can see far ahead there is very low traffic.

For a kids' desert biking experience, Coachwhip Canyon, in the Borrego Bandlands is a good choice.  Riding is on a dirt road but it is pretty solid in many places. Vehicle traffice is generally light and slow, but this is a roadway so be careful.  The desert scenery is spectacular with lots of rocks for kids to climb and explore.  See Coachwhip Canyon on our Easy Walks page.

Directly across from the entrance to Coachwhip Canyon a dirt road leads a short distance to the Arroyo Salado primitive campground.  The area is similar to coachwhip.

The campground at Aqua Caliente County Park is a great place for kids.  See Agua Caliente County Park, listed under the Southern Immigrant Trail on our Car Trips page.
