The ABDNHA Desert Garden Book Reference
The ABDNHA Desert Garden is a place of reflection and beauty, alive with plants from North America's major deserts, along with birds, butterfiles, rabbits, and other desert creatures, in the heart of Borrego Springs.

Stroll across a wooden bridge over a dry creek bed to enter a unique desert garden, artistically designed with creatively placed plants and interesting outdoor spaces.  Trees such as palo verde, mesquite, and palms provide shade and shelter as you follow along a path with interpretive signs that tell the story of desert plants, the replationships with bird and animals, and give a overview of the agricultural history of Borrego Springs.

The garden is also a great spot for birders and photographers, particularly during the springtime, when hummingbirds are plentiful, feeding on the blooming flowers and often nesting in the garden, along with other spring migrants as they pass through the area.

The garden is located behind the ADBNHA Desert Nature Center and Store and administrative offices, at 652 Palm Canyon Drive, just west of Carlee's Restaurant.  The garden is open to the public without charge from dawn until dusk every day of the week.

Short Hikes around Borrego Springs
Kenyon Overlook Trail  A short walk with a fantastic view.  An easy walk from the parking lot beside Yaqui Pass Road (S3) approximately 2 miles from the Tamarisk Campground.  This is a great hike at sunset, as the distant mountain ranges take on subtle hues and shadows drift across the bajadas.
Book Reference: Anza Borrego Desert Region, Page 166

Borrego Palm Canyon Trail  At the western edge of Borrego Springs, next to the Palm Canyon Campground in Anza-Borrego State Park.  Just minutes from Christmas Circle.  See an oasis of native palms, interesting geology, lots of lizards along the way, and if you are lucky, you might see some desert bighorn sheep.  This is the most heavily used trail in Anza-Borrego. 3 miles roundtrip.  This trail is also the most likely place where you will see Desert Bighorn Sheep.
Book Reference: Anza Borrego Desert Region, Pages 72-77

Note: The palm grove burned early in 2020 and the trail has been closed for restoration.  Check if the trail is open before you head out.

Book Reference: Anza Borrego Desert Region, Pages 67-68

Glorietta Canyon and Wash   Glorietta Canyon is just minutes from Borrego Springs and it offers lots several options for hiking, all with beautiful scenery, plants and rock formations.  The unmarked dirt road to the trailhead is on the south side of Highway S3 between mile markers 8 and 9.
Book Reference: Anza Borrego Desert Region, Pages 167-168
Hellhole Canyon to Maidenhair Falls  Maidenhair Falls is an excellent hiking destination in the Anza-Borrego Desert. If it is hotter than a hellhole in Borrego Springs, head up the trail to Maidenhair Falls for an exhilarating cold shower. No fee or permit is required to hike to Maidenhair Falls in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, so get out and enjoy! To get to the trailhead: From Christmas Circle in Borrego Springs, drive 1.3 miles west on Palm Canyon Road. Turn left on Montezuma Valley Road (Route S22), which is 0.4 miles before the park visitor center. Drive 0.8 miles south and turn right into the large dirt parking area at the trailhead (just before the road heads up the mountain). There is a bathroom at the far end of the lot away from the start of the trail.
