Hawkwatch Counts

Counting hawks

Each year during the season, which starts usually around mid-February and ends at the end of April, we organize teams of hawk watchers. They are very dedicated people who show up twice a day, rain or shine, at the 2 set locations in Borrego Springs, to watch, count and record the number of Swainson’s Hawks as they are migrating to the North.

These data, along with data collected from hawkwatches across America and Mexico, are published each spring in a periodical of the Hawk Migration Association (HMA).

Daily counts for most hawkwatches can be found at www.hawkcount.org
