4WD Tour: Rainbow Wash & Beyond
Leader: Todd Linke, ABDNHA Volunteer
Meet at the ABDNHA parking lot at 9 a.m. to caravan to the Buttes Pass Road trailhead. Stops: Hawk Canyon, Goat Trail, Blowsand Canyon Rd., San Felipe Wash Rd., Borrego Badlands (via Rainbow Wash), Fault Wash, Short Wash, Vista del Malpais, and Thimble Trail, with an optional stop at Font's Point. Bring food, water, weather-appropriate clothing, a hat, and a chair. Walkie-talkies on channel 2. No charge; registration required at the Nature Center (760-767-3098). Because of our small group size, ABDNHA members have priority on 4WD trips. We invite you to join today!
Note: Rated Level 4 Short Wheelbase Vehicle only. Rainbow Wash requires high-clearance, short-wheelbase 4WD and confidence in off-camber situations and soft sand. Sway bar disconnecting or airing down can help traction and comfort.

November 11, 2026 -Field Trip: Borrego Rock & Gem (BRAG) Club
Hike: Rainbow Canyon
Leaders: Greg Winterowd and Amy Brueggemeyer, ABDNHA Volunteers
Five-mile moderately strenuous hike through dry waterfalls and colorful metamorphic rock to a Blair Valley viewpoint. Good location for springtime blooms. Wear sturdy shoes/boots, hat, sun protection, and gloves (required); bring water, snack, and optional poles. Meet at the ABDNHA parking lot at 7:50 a.m. for a 40-minute drive (carpooling recommended). Maximum nine participants. No charge. Call or visit the Nature Center at 760-767-3098 to register.

Relaxed social ride of 20-30 mostly flat miles at a 10-12 mph pace. Routes will vary weekly; fun rides to highlight the roads less traveled. Return time will vary by the route chosen. No charge or registration required. Meet in the parking lot opposite the public County Library’s south entrance.

4WD Field Trip: Ancient Lake Cahuilla
Leader: John Peterson, Hydrologist and Geologist
This half-day field trip to the Salton Sea lets you look back in time at the remnants of the ancient lake, with an up-close look at the “bathtub ring” and fishing traps along the old shoreline. Maximum 15 participants. 4WD recommended. GP $12; M $10; V $8. Meet in the gravel parking lot across from ABDNHA, between Jilberto’s and The Mall. The ABDNHA parking lot will be in use for the Attic Sale.
