Speaker: Diana Lindsay, Historian and Author
They are unique in America, and people from around the world are drawn here to see them. This is the story of a chance encounter between a local visionary and an ambitious, talented artist, and how that encounter led to the creation of more than 100 metal sculptures across the Borrego Valley known as "Sky Art". The most famous of all, the massive sculpture of a sand servant that goes under a highway on one side and emerges on the other, is used by the State of California in tourism information worldwide. All of these sculptures came to life in the artist's mind, but not all are fictional; some depict ancient animals that once roamed the Borrego Valley, as well as the human history of our area. And there is a new one as well, a giant roadrunner facing off against a snake, that matches the scale of the sand serpent. Join historian, author, and publisher Diana Lindsay as she tells the fascinating history of how the Borrego Valley became an outdoor art exhibit under the desert sky. In the ABDNHA Library. GP $12, M $10, V $8. The presentation will be followed by a tour of the sculptures the following morning, Saturday, November 28, at 9 a.m.
