Central Anza-Borrego: Sunset Mountain

Sunset Mountain at Sunset

It's one of Anza-Borrego's most beautiful sights, a colorful sunset on Sunset Mountain. It doesn't happen every evening, but when it does it's something to enjoy from the Kenyon Overlook on the Yaqui Pass Road, or from downtown Borrego Springs behind the stores across Palm Canyon Drive from ABDNHA's Borrego Desert Nature Center.

The Sunset Mountain vicinity can also be the setting for some worthwhile hikes. Here are some ideas.

Pinyon Wash
Hike up and around Sunset Mountain from this wash. Or, a five-mile drive to a trailhead where a one-mile hike takes you to the former Indian settlement at Harper Flat. You'll see the mountain on your way back.
Nolina Wash
Taking the right fork at mile 1.6 on the Pinyon Wash road takes you two miles into Nolina Wash and more possible hikes in the mountains.
Narrows Earth Trail
Just before Highway 78 makes a sharp turn to the left. This is an easy one-mile tour of Anza-Borrego geology near Sunset Mountain.
Old Borrego Valley Road
This was part of the original route used by Borrego Springs pioneers to get to El Centro in Imperial County. It's a peaceful drive past lots of cholla that ends at Ram's Hill.
