The sun is the source of all energy we use on Earth. The sun gives plants they energy to grow. Plants are the food for all animals. Even the fuel that we use in our cars was created by the sun. It provided the energy for plants and animals millions of years ago. When those plants and animals died and decayed, they slowly changed into oil, and humans make gasoline from that oil.
The sun in the desert can be very strong and it can get very hot. This is because the sky is clear, and there is little rain or clouds to block the sun’s rays. People now make electricity directly from the sun in solar energy plants. There is a solar energy plant in Borrego Springs. A fun way to experience the energy from the sun is to make a solar cooker.
The cooker will work best on a day when the sun is very strong. It will probably work better in a place like Anza-Borrego than in a cloudy or cold place.
