Colorful mineral crystals and gemstones at Borrego Rock & Gem Club event.

What is BRAG?

BRAG is an acronym for the Borrego Rock And Gem Club.

Love Rocks? This is the Club for You!

Got rock? This club is for people who want to learn about rocks and participate in rockhounding field trips. The club has been rocking since February 2003.

Field trips are on the 2nd Wednesday of the month (between October and May), usually starting at 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. and taking most of the day. We meet in the ABDNHA parking lot and carpool to a rock-collecting site.

Meetings are on the 4th Wednesday of the month (between October and May) at 2 p.m. in the ABDNHA Activity Room, 652 Palm Canyon Drive. November and December meetings may be on the 3rd Wednesday due to holidays. We plan field trips & activities, discuss the “rock of the month,” and bring rocks for show & tell!

How BRAG Membership Works

BRAG club membership is obtained through joining two organizations:

  • ABDNHA (Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association)
  • CFMS (California Federation of Mineralogical Societies)

ABDNHA membership allows the club to use ABDNHA’s facilities, office equipment, display and web space. Additional information regarding ABDNHA can be found at their website www.abdnha.org. ABDNHA membership starts at $35 per year, but you can join at a higher level if you wish to support desert education.

CFMS membership allows the club to have liability insurance, take part in CFMS-sponsored field trips, and have access to CFMS videos, books and other teaching tools. Further information regarding CFMS can be found at their website www.cfmsinc.org. BRAG club dues are $16 per year (plus $10 for additional family members). The dues include CFMS membership and insurance.
