Anza-Borrego Reptiles & Amphibians
More than 70 species of snakes, lizards, and amphibians are found in Anza-Borrego.
The Anza-Borrego region ranges from the hot and dry deserts of the Salton Sea, barely above sea level in the east, all the way up to 6,000 feet, in the moist and cold mountain tops that rise in the west. Within this range of elevations, there are a tremendous variety of habitats, as well as a tremendous variety in the plants and animals that inhabit them.
Reptiles and amphibians are no exception, and the full list of lizards, snakes, salamanders, toads, frogs, geckos, skinks, etc. includes considerable diversity.
The photo gallery shown on this page does not include all of the species found in Anza-Borrego, but it does show many of the more common ones, along with the wide variety of “herps” that live here. (A herp is a term for either a reptile or an amphibian, or for the collective groups of these animals.)
