Chihuahua Valley Road
Chihuahua Valley Road departs Highway 79 one mile north of Sunshine Summit
and three miles south of Oak Grove. After a climb through the rugged Previtt
Canyon, the road turns into a long and serene valley. Roadside trailmarkers
indicate that this is part of the California Riding & Hiking Trail which
can be followed north to the Durazno Valley at the south edge of the Cahuilla
Indian Reservation in Anza.
At mile marker 6, look for a wooden sign for the Lost Valley Scout Camp.
Before reaching the scout camp, the road enters Anza-Borrego Desert State
Park at Bucksnort Mountain. The Pacific Crest Trail
crosses the road and can be hiked to enjoy mountain scenery, with an optional
climb to Combs Peak, the park's tallest point.
