Anza-Borrego North: South Fork Palm Wash
Pygmy Cedar, Peucephyllum scottii (Asteraceae)
South Fork, Palm Wash
Palm Wash extends from the Santa Rosa Mountains and flows
eastward through the Truckhaven section of Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular
Recreation Area to the Salton Sea.
The South Fork of Palm Wash, an easy walk down the Calcite
Mine Road from the Borrego-Salton Seaway, is popular for the slot canyon
at its west end. The South Fork is also notable for its plants and concretions.
Plants of interest here include Pygmy
Cedar, Dead
Man's Fingers, Little
Trumpet, and Orcutt's
Woody Aster. In fact, Orcutt's Woody Aster remains an attractive plant
in a dry state, after its blooming season is over.
