Anza-Borrego North: Coyote Canyon: Desert Gardens
Desert Gardens
When it rains, sand washes down toward Coyote Creek from the Santa Rosa
Mountains, including the ridge leading to Coyote Mountain. The alluvial
fan is quite fertile and produces a nice variety of blossoms in wildflower
season. The mountain canyons invite exploration by people looking for easy
walks and a little distance from the jeep trail. Take the Alcoholic
Pass trail to enjoy the view from the top of the Coyote Mountain ridge.
Desert Gardens is an example of people making a diference. As Diana Lindsay
tells the story, the Anza-Borrego Committee of the Desert Protective Council
raised the money to aquire the land from private owners. In 1971, the committee
turned the land over to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The Desert Protective
Council is now the Anza-Borrego Foundation.
