Central Anza-Borrego: Old Kane Spring Road
Old Kane Spring Road
In the days before fast cars and Highway 78, people crossed the desert by
going from one water source to the next. Indians probably developed the first
pathways from villages in and around the Vallecito Mountains to Lake Cahuilla
and the Colorado River.
Old Kane Spring Road is a single-lane jeep trail. It can be driven in a passenger
car for about three miles to the turnoff to Harper
Canyon and the Cactus Garden. Beyond that
point, it crosses Harper Wash where exposed rocks and soft sand make high
clearance and 4WD a necessity.
