Buckwheat, or Eriogonum, is a large genus of plants in the Buckwheat family, or Polygonaceae. Because the genus is large with many species, varieties of species, and subspecies, precise identification is often best left to qualified botanists. For the rest of us, just calling a Buckwheat a Buckwheat should be sufficient.
Buckwheat is a plant of the higher desert elevations and chaparral.
