Bigelow's Monkey Flower, Mimulus bigelovii

This is the most common of several species of Monkey Flower found in Anza-Borrego. Look for carpets of its red flowers in dry sandy washes in spring.

Other Mimulus species are far less common. In and around Anza-Borrego's southwest reaches, from Indian Hill to Jacumba, and westward, you might encounter the Jacumba Monkey Flower (Mimulus aurantiacus var. aridus). Seep Monkey Flower (Mimulus guttatus) might be found in the mountains off the Sunrise Highway (S-1) or Highway 79 south of Julian. Slope Semaphore (Mimulus brevipes) has been found in Bitter Creek Canyon. Fremont's Monkey Flower (Mimulus fremontii var. fremontii) has been seen in Grapevine Canyon. Bush Monkey Flower (Mimulus aurantiacus var. pubescens) has been found in Borrego Palm Canyon. Scarlet Monkey Flower (Mimulus cardinalis) might be found near Upper Willows.
