Energy Career Exploration Day is a unique program created jointly by the non-profit Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association and SDG&E, San Diego Gas & Electric.

The program was developed in 2012 in response to the realization that high school students in the isolated community of Borrego Springs are not exposed to the same variety of quality career options as urban high school students.  The need to provide career information for local Borrego students matched up well with the need of SDG&E to encourage students to obtain training for the many job skills they will require in the future.

In 2012, the first year of the program, the student participants all came from Borrego Springs High School.  The entire senior class participated in the program, along with many juniors.  The program has now expanded to include seven high schools.

The program is conducted in the same format as a professional business meeting and is often the first time that students experience the real world of business.  The meeting is fast-paced and active.  After a brief greeting and orientation the students are introduced to professionals who give five minute lively presentations on their field of employment: what it is about, how you train for it, and the jobs available.

Speakers include professionals in the fields of electrical and mechanical engineering, electricial work, lineman, accounting and finance , information technology, human resources, maintenance, human resources, community relations, customer service, aerospace, meteorology, GPS, and more.

During lunch students are matched with career mentors who sit at their tables and hold discussions about the fields in which they work, and the day concludes with students visiting display tables of the companies represented.

Students visit display tables by the organizations and companies that participate in the program.   Students talk with a mentor from Lockheed-Martin about careers in aerospace.

Students learn about training that is available for future electricians.
An SDG&E Electrical Engineer talks with high school students about her responsibilities.
An SDG&E finance manager gives a presentation about her career.
