Apr. 10, Fri., 7:00 p.m. ABDNHA 43rd Annual Desert Lecture Series
Disappearing Groundwater in the Western United States Speaker: Jay
Famiglietti, Hydrologist, NASA JPL Senior Water Scientist, UCI Professor, Researcher
Free to ABDNHA Members, All Others $10 at the door, Seating is
First-Come, First-Served
Jay Famiglietti is an internationally recognized authority on climate change
and water resources, often the go to person when governments, industry,
researchers, and the media need to know what the future holds in terms of
water. As a senior scientist with NASA’s
satellite-based GRACE project, Famiglietti will explain how satellite imaging
is exposing the global nature of groundwater depletion and how that is being
combined with ground-based research, such as observations of wells in the
Coachella Valley.
Groundwater supplies roughly half of the water used for
irrigation and drinking water in the United States. During the recent California
drought, groundwater has provided as much as 75% of all the water used in the
state. In small towns like Borrego Springs, groundwater can represent the
only available sourse of water. Issues of sustainability and the need for groundwater
management will be discussed, as will the role of managed recharge, sewage
recycling, water pricing, and other components of a multi-faceted management
approach.
No charge to ABDNHA Members. For nonmembers, there is a $10.00 fee at the
door, which may be applied to a new membership in ABDNHA. At the Borrego
Springs Performing Arts Center. Seating is limited and on a first-come basis.
For more information, call (760) 767-3098. Refreshments served following the
program.
Apr. 11, Sat., 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Lecture: The Geology of Aquifers
Speaker: Jay Famiglietta UCI – NASA JPL Senior Water Scientist An introduction to
Aquifers.
This is an extremely rare opportunity to not only hear Jay
Famiglietti speak, but also have the chance to question and converse with him
one on one in a classroom setting as the Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History
Association ( ABDNHA) brings Jay Famiglietti to Borrego Springs for this small
group lecture. Space is limited.
An introduction into the geology of aquifers. What is their structure? How do
they collect and hold water? How long does it take for an aquifer to be
recharged? How deep are they? How do they differ one from the other? How long
is water held underground before we extract it? What is aquifer subsidence?
What determines the water quality in an aquifer? What are some of the factors
that put aquifers at risk, such as drawdown or earthquakes?

Technology: The Electrical Grid of the Future Speaker: Tom Bialek, Ph.D.,
P.E. Chief Engineer of Smart Grid & Renewables, Sempra Energy
Just as the internet has revolutionized the way people communicate,
technological changes in the field of energy are transforming the way energy
is produced, distributed, and used.
Tom Bialek, Chief Engineer of Smart Grid Technologies, Sempra Energy, is
among the most knowledgeable engineers in America working directly with the
technologies and the science transforming the world of energy: solar,
microgrids, distributed generation, smart grids, transmission, and battery
storage. Are you one of the 320 million Americans who uses electricity? Learn
how electricity is generated and delivered to your home or business now and
how that technology will change in the future.

4:00 p.m. Program: “Harvesting
Nature’s Energy: Geothermal Power in the Salton Sea Basin” Presented by
Vince Signorotti, Vice President: EnergySource LLC, Resource and Real Estate
Assets. Hear the history of energy development in Imperial County and learn why
geothermal plants are located on the shores of the Salton Sea. Learn what
geothermal energy is and how it is converted into energy we can use.
Experience a short “virtual tour” of a geothermal plant. Vince Signorotti has
worked in the energy business for over 32 years, with the majority of time in
the renewable energy sector, primarily geothermal energy development.
Currently, at EnergySource LLC, he is responsible for the acquisition and
maintenance of land, leases and the real estate components for the Hudson
Ranch project, which is located near the Salton Sea. He is also involved in
legislative affairs and regulatory issues associated with geothermal energy
development.

April 12, Sun., 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Tour: John L. Featherstone Geothermal Power Plant Tour Leader: Vince
Signorotti Tour the John L Featherstone plant south of the Salton
Sea, a three-stage flash geothermal plant that provides power for
approximately 50,000 homes with no outside fuel required. It is the first new
stand-alone geothermal plant in over 20 years in the Salton Sea area. On the
tour we will see the fascinating process that converts natural heat into
electrical energy. Requires long pants, closed-toed walking shoes, no tank
tops. Meet at ABDNHA and carpool. There is a maximum group size of 20
