Meet at the ABDNHA parking lot at 9:00 a.m. We will take S22 to reach the trailhead of Rockhouse Trail and then travel off-road for 12 miles north. The last 3 miles of trail between Butler Canyon and Hidden Spring require a vehicle with sufficient clearance\, a short wheelbase\, and a tire tread design to negotiate the trail. There is no steep terrain\, but the trail consists of large\, smooth river rock. Parking at 4WD trail end 33.42278\,-116.38778\, where we take lunch. Those who wish may join the leader on 2-mile round-trip walk to the dry falls in the spectacular Rock House Canyon. The walk is easy\, and the terrain is flat. Departing from Hidden Spring\, we return to S22 on the same 4WD trail and say goodbye. Bring plenty of water\, food\, snacks\, a hat\, and a chair. If you have a GRMS 2-way radio\, we will be communicating on channel 14. ABDNHA members only. If you are not a member\, you may request being put on the waitlist. \n

SUMMARY:Hike: Plum Canyon/Sentenac Mountain Loop (Strenuous)
DESCRIPTION:Hike Leader: Rachel Rench\nThis hike will start at the parking area on Hwy 78  on a cross country route over to Plum Canyon. After dropping into Plum Canyon we’ll turn Right and climb up a wash to Sentenac Mtn and enjoy the view of Granite Peak\, Shelter Valley and the San Felipe Valley. From the top of the mountain we’ll head West\, then South\, briefly dropping into Plum Canyon. We’ll stay in this wash\, and climb out and over a steep hill where we negotiate our way into a rocky drainage and the East Fork of Plum Canyon. We’ll return to our cars on the jeep road.  The loop covers 6 miles\, and 900 ft of elevation gain to Sentenac Mountain. Meet at ABDNHA at 8am to carpool to the parking area. Bring lunch\, snacks and 2 liters of water per person.

DESCRIPTION:FIELD TRIP IS FULL. Call 760-767-3098 to get on waitlist. \nLeader: John Peterson\, Hydrologist and Geologist\nStarting approximately 12\,000 years ago\, the Colorado River periodically changed its course\, flowing north into the Salton Sink and creating a massive prehistoric lake. For thousands of years\, this lake filled and dried up repeatedly\, becoming an important source of food and water for the Cahuilla\, Kumeyaay\, and Cocopah peoples. The last time the lake was filled was between 1731 and 1733. Hydrologist John Peterson will lead this half-day field trip to the Salton Sea\, providing an opportunity to look back in time and explore the remnants of the ancient lake\, including the ancient shoreline (the “bathtub ring”) that is still visible and the fish traps along the old shoreline. 15 people. DESCRIPTION:HIKE IS FULL. Call 760-767-3098 to get on waitlist. \nLeader: Robin Halford\, ABDNHA Volunteer \nAggregate Canyon is one of the most fascinating slot canyons in the Mecca Wilderness. The long hike up the wash is interesting and then the slot canyon goes for quite a distance. This hike would be rated easy\, except that the last 0.1 mile is a steep climb up the rim for a view of the Salton Sea. The total hike distance (round trip) is 4.8 miles. Sturdy shoes\, walking sticks recommended. Bring snack/lunch and water. Limit 10. \nNote: Meets at Box Canyon! \nDriving instructions to meeting location: Drive North on Hwy 86\, and go right (east) on 66th Ave. Go over the bypass bridge and turn right (east) at the light. Drive 7.0 miles (2.5 miles past Painted Canyon Road)\, and park on the left (N) side of Box Canyon Road. No charge. Register at the ABDNHA Nature Center.

SUMMARY:ABDNHA Members 4WD Tour: Return to Toro Peak
DESCRIPTION:This free event will take us to Toro Peak\, one of the most prominent mountains in Southern California\, located in the rugged Santa Rosa Mountain range\, which separates the Coachella Valley (Palm Springs/Indio area) from Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. \nFor this tour\, we will journey up to 8\,300 feet on Toro Peak to take in the expansive views of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park\, Salton Sea\, Coachella Valley\, and beyond. \nMEET at 8:45 a.m. in Mountain Center\, Riverside County\, at intersection of State Route 371 and SR 74 at the Paradise Valley Café parking lot\, 61721 CA-74\, Mountain Center\, CA 92561. (The cafe opens at 8 a.m. and serves breakfast). Important: From Borrego Springs\, allow at least 90 minutes to the meeting place. \nWe will depart at 9 a.m. for the Santa Rosa Road trailhead\, where we begin our ascent at 4\,600 feet and wind up 12.5 miles on a one-lane service road through thick shrubland\, which gives way to tall pines. Steep drop-offs along the drive offer impressive views. Enroute are numerous single and multi-camp sites\, as well as a pit toilet. At the top are rock outcroppings within a moderate 200-300-yard hike that offer a bird’s eye view below. A bring-your-own lunch stop is planned at the top. \nDry road conditions are good\, but some areas require 4WD and high clearance. Bring a full tank of fuel. Hiking poles recommended. Please check the weather and dress accordingly. GMRS Channel 15 is optional. Trip ends about 2 p.m. at SR 74. Trip is weather-dependent. \nSpace and vehicles limited. Register at the ABDNHA Nature Center\, open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, or call 760-767-3098 to reserve your spot. \nIf you are not already a member of ABDNHA\, we invite you to join!
