SUMMARY:Field Trip: Ancient Lake Cahuilla
DESCRIPTION:FIELD TRIP IS FULL. Call 760-767-3098 to get on waitlist. \nLeader: John Peterson\, Hydrologist and Geologist\nStarting approximately 12\,000 years ago\, the Colorado River periodically changed its course\, flowing north into the Salton Sink and creating a massive prehistoric lake. For thousands of years\, this lake filled and dried up repeatedly\, becoming an important source of food and water for the Cahuilla\, Kumeyaay\, and Cocopah peoples. The last time the lake was filled was between 1731 and 1733. Hydrologist John Peterson will lead this half-day field trip to the Salton Sea\, providing an opportunity to look back in time and explore the remnants of the ancient lake\, including the ancient shoreline (the “bathtub ring”) that is still visible and the fish traps along the old shoreline. 15 people. General Public: $18\, Members: $12\, Volunteers: $10. Register online or at the Nature Center\, 760-767-3098.

SUMMARY:Full Moon Walk: South Palm Wash (Easy)
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Mike McElhatton\, ABDNHA Education Director\nJoin ABDNHA’s Program Director Mike McElhatton on this month’s Full Moon Walk in South Palm Wash. Experience the unique and serene beauty of moonlight on the canyon walls as we take a 1.5-mile walk through South Palm Wash. Mostly a fairly easy walk\, with a few moderate areas that require “big steps” on inclines. We meet at the ABDNHA Library and carpool from there. A flashlight\, water\, and good hiking shoes are required. Limit 22. Activity cancels if cloud cover limits the moonlight. No charge. Call the Nature Center at 760-767-3098 to reserve.

At the top are rock outcroppings within a moderate 200-300-yard hike that offer a bird’s eye view below. A bring-your-own lunch stop is planned at the top. \nDry road conditions are good\, but some areas require 4WD and high clearance. Bring a full tank of fuel. Hiking poles recommended.
