The Anza expeditions came up the Borrego Valley, crossing Coyote Creek at a spot they called La Vada, or the ford. Historical markers trace their route. The expeditions continued up the creek and climbed through Nance Canyon to the Cahuilla (or Anza) Valley at a spot that Anza called Puerto Real de San Carlos.
