The historic Grapevine Canyon jeep trail extends northward from Highway 78 across Yaqui Flat and up Grapevine Canyon past the Indian village site at Angelina Spring. Leaving the state park, it goes through Hoover Canyon to the Montezuma Valley Road (County Road S-22).

The California Riding & Hiking Trail from Plum Canyon joins the Grapevine Canyon trail, but remains inside the state park by turning north at the Jasper Trail, just before the Hoover Canyon junction.

Before Highway 78 and County Roads S-3 and S-22, the Grapevine Canyon trail was a main thoroughfare to the Borrego Valley. Horses and wagons went eastward through the Narrows and then up what is now the Old Borrego Valley Road.
